Where’s the new Mac Pro?

My 2009 edition Mac Pro is really starting to feel long in the tooth. Not slow, just not as perky as she was when I bought it. Intel Xeon 5520s were great when released but the time has come to upgrade to the current generation.

Yeah, I like having 8 cores, 12-48 GiB of RAM, and something I can put my storage (couple of SSDs and 1 2 TiB Seagate 7200 spiny) into. I even added an AMD Radeon HD 7970 to the system recently to continue my gaming. (yeah, no comment)

But it is still feeling old and cold after 4 years and I am not ready to make the change to an iMac:

  • Not expandable in the general sense
  • Single storage device is the suck
  • No where near as sexy as a Mac Pro

I will admit, though, that I have a new 27″ iMac at the office and it is absolutely wonderful! But it ain’t no Mac Pro and those of you who own a Mac Pro know what I am talking about.

Hurry up Mr. Cook!

    • Hellz yeah!

I do hope I can put in some real GPUs instead of ‘workstation class’ cause I wanna do more than just FCP or Aperture on this thing.

  • Really? I think they did a Mac mini job on the Mac Pro. It’s the ultimate Apple evolution. The thing looks like it will basically be an unexpandable coffee can, and you’ll be able to separate the men from the boys by looking at how many tails are coming off the thing to a pile of external Thunderbolt and USB3 devices to work around the expandability shortcomings.

On one hand, I think it is brilliant, because I’ve never stored critical files locally, and the ready availability of network attached storage these days seems like a good fit. I think it could be argued that the lack of space for massive local storage options can be offset in that manner. However, I am disappointed to note that the network connectivity is only 2 x 1GbE instead of 10GbE or 2 x 10GbE. So it’s almost like they expect you to attach your storage locally.

On the flip side, most of the Mac Pro fans I know have expanded their Mac Pros in various ways, and this looks like some of those options, including graphics upgrades, are effectively off the table.

I do look forward to roasting marshmallows over the top of one of these things though.
